The Stratford Women’s Club was organized in 1954 as the population of the area began to expand with construction of the Laurel Mills development. One of the early and notable efforts of the club was the establishment of the Stratford Free Library.

The club also sponsored local high school juniors from Sterling High School to the State Girls Career Institute annually beginning when the regional school was built in 1956. This supports the organization’s mission to help women become community leaders.

Another annual effort begun in the sixties was the awarding of bonds and scholarships to outstanding 8 th grade graduates from Yellin and St. Luke’s School.

In 1976, realizing the positive impact of healthy living on girls and women, the members decided to target outreach towards this goal by sponsoring a girl’s softball team for the local league which still continues each Spring. The president of the club attends opening day to support their players.

In the 90’s the women expanded their involvement in literacy and leadership by selecting and donating books to the elementary schools of Stratford. Their support of the library, which by this time had built a dedicated facility, noteworthy among the small towns of this area, continues.

The club has the following committees which have produced many fine projects over the years:

  • Education

  • Home Life

  • Arts/Creative

  • Arts/Performing

  • Communication

  • International Affairs

  • Memberships

  • Public Affair

  • Programs

The club joined the state organization at the time of incorporation and has annually supported the varying causes advocated at the state level.

In 2006 the club put its web site on the ‘net.
